If a teenage girl would be paintind the inside of a garden shed cabin what colors should she paint it?

If a teenage girl is painting the inside of her rustic cabin/garden shed in her parents back yard what colors should she go with? She has wood floors and wood walls. The door on the inside is a woodfinish.

The cabin has no bathroom inside. She will be sleeping inside on some summer nights. Since she has windows that are like shutters she will not see anything while inside at night. She wants to paint the inside of the door and shutters a different color than the walls. What colors do people recomend for the shutters and door?

While inside she plans to close the door and shutters. Her desk and cott and going to be looking at the door. What color should she paint the door?

I wnetioned white and she said white makes her feel depressed. She wants one color for the walls and another for the door and windows.

What color would look good for the inside of the door?

Why do you keep asking this stupid question????
Reply:it confused me that you are not the girl asking the question. are you perhaps a young woman also or a grown man. and if your a grown man then why are you worried about what she wants for the paint color. if you were a teenage girl i would tell you to paint the inside any color you like. but, i think you are a young man in your early 20's and i find you very disterbing. yuck.
Reply:A nice pink or pastel yellow would look really really good. And maybe get a good wallpaper trim. The door should be something totally different, like lime green or aqua blue. =] Also, you should spruce the place up by adding lots of light sources, like lava lamps. To make the room look bigger, add tons of mirrors, and when nights get hot, be sure to add a stand up fan. If you can, get a shelf to put some nice books and maybe a portable DVD player on top. Urban outfitters and Anthropologie have lots of really cute stuff, like designer dorrknobs and cute odd-and-ends, so maybe look there.
Reply:Light and cheerful colors.. she should decide as she has to look at the walls.. it should be light colours.. that will make the cabin appear brighter and larger... apart from that.. leave her free hand.. she should use multi colors which look nice together.. but paint the wall a light colour... so she feels there is more light and space than there actually is... xxx
Reply:blue is restfull, green is cool , maybe a mural to have something to look at?

polka dots on the ceiling so you can lie and count the dots , ( you would never get the amount right as they would move all the time )

black so you could imagine you were in a cave and then put all those glow in the dark stickers around

but then again with all that wood maybe don't paint at all , cos then you would be needing to have it sanded and sealed and then painted , a lot of work !!!
Reply:Easter colors.

What would a female in her 20s think of a guy in his 20s who had a garden shed to hang out in?

Currently I"m a guy in his mid 20s who is stuck living at home due to high rental prices. I have thought about building a small garden shed in my parents backyard to read and take naps in. The shed would have a skylight with no windows. The floors would be made of wood with a rug on the floor. Eventually if I enjoy the shed I would put a tv and computer inside.

If I became friends with a female or even my male friends would they think I"m nuts to bring them to my garden shed to hang out at night. Bringing friends into my parents house isn't fun. My parents are very nosy. I'm going to be living at home for at least antoher 2-3 years.

Some of my male friends think this is a silly idea?

My friends are judgemental. This would be a semi-studio apartment without a restroom inside.

I would paint the walls green.blue or aqua. The inside of the door would be sky blue, green or dark blue.

They'd think you were pretty creative.
Reply:I've lived in all sorts of weird situation... a VW bus parked in a friends front yard, in the shed behind the house, a converted schoolbus, an old Army Tent (big tent, like in MASH)...
Reply:I was in the Peace Corps twice and in this world there are many families of 6 or 8 people who life in spaces smaller and less comfortable than your garden shed. There are more than 1 BILLION people in this world who live on about a dollar or less a day. Your garden shed is in fact almost a castle when compared to how many of us in this world live.

You should not worry about what others think so much and just do what you need to do to live and experience the precious gift of life that we have.

Keep on being yourself and God Bless and Peace to you!

If you made it a comfortable then it would probably be o.k.

Make it look less like a shed on the inside and I can't see anyone caring.

If you're friends are that judgemental then they may not be the right friends for you. It's just a place to hang out not to sleep etc. Except for yourself.

I don't know how severe your cp, tourettes or add is but the doorknob would probably make it easier for you to open the door. You also need to consider how close the nearest bathroom is.

It sound good to me though you just need some lights, windows or a skylight
Reply:I would think that to be very odd. What female would want to hang out in a garden shed with no windows alone with a guy? That's kinda scary. No bathroom, no doorknob, no windows, etc. Sounds like serial killer to me!
Reply:Why not.Who cares if anyone else likes it,at least you will have a place you can go to escape the nosey parents for awhile.
Reply:Hanging out in the garden shed is fine when your are with your friends but you should find somewhere else to go when you are with female.
Reply:a lot of people turn a garage into a living space-so why not a shed...
Reply:it actually sounds kinda cool! i mean, u could like make it a big garden shed (with window AND a door otherwise, it would b a little scary for the girl) and maybe even have a bathroom! the only thing that matters is that you like it. dont worry about ur friends who are judgemental. at least ur tryin to hav ur independence from ur parents ( i totally understand how that is). maybe u could make it big enough to fit ur bed it it so it really would b like having ur own "apartment". i would recommend HGTV..it sounds stupid but they have some great shows on decor and how to build stuff.

so have fun with it and make it ur own :) good luck and good for u!
Reply:No, don't spend money just now. Save every penny and move out. Maybe a flat share. If you make yourself comfartable there, you'll be there for many years to come. And don't think your parents wont be nosing around your shed. If anything it will get even worse.
Reply:I would not invest a whole lot of money in this idea, and I would not plan on a woman staying the night there.

A woman needs a bathroom and she might not feel ok going into your house to use one in the middle of the night.

She also needs to feel safe - and I doubt many women would feel safe without a window because the fear that if anything happened to them, no one would think to check the garden shed that looked just like a garden shed. They might not fear you at all until they encounter the shed.

I'd say make it bare bones comfortable for yourself as a place to hang out during daylight hours. If you have friends who feel comfortable there - it is an added benefit, but I wouldn't plan on it.

Save your money as much as you can so you can get a real studio apartment.
Reply:A shed is a great idea for you to hang out in and get away from your parents- but I'm pretty sure women wouldn't be interested in being in it. Nor do I think they'll want to hang out with you at your parent's. Do you have a garage you can convert? Maybe a converted garage would be a better idea.
Reply:anytime you build something you need the county's approval (and there's a fee involved). Usually people build what is called an "in-law suite" which could mean one room, however you would need a window for ventilation and all the other things a small house would. Years ago an addition of one room to the house would cost $10,000 but the price has steadily gone up, and that is "not" the cost of an "in-law suite". Some people clean out the basement (put things into storage or into the attic) and that gives one the space to get away from the family. Occasionally people do the opposite and clean out the attic (depends on where you live and if you can climb those flimsy steps safely) and make one room and bath up there but you'd need good ventilation. Still other people convert the garage to a bedroom for some peace and relaxation to get away for a while. Think about those alternatives. They would be a lot easier than trying to take out a huge loan or a second mortgage on the present home. If (when) you become 18 and are on your own perhaps your disability funds will allow you to make rental payments to your family on that "garage apartment". You can place a bathroom in that garage apartment, and have a small frig. Other than that you can eat your meals with the rest of the family.

Having white (or brick if you have to) walls make it feel like there's more room and so that you won't get that closed in feeling you'd need to go with white. But, you could have sheets and pillows or even a rug of the color of your choice. Medium blue would be good, and a flat rug so that wheels would roll easily. If you could get that garage done up that would be great. Wood floors are super expensive these days and if you have a full rug you don't need wood floors. Sometimes throw rugs are dangerous (tripping), although you could have plywood under that rug. Remember not to put anything important on the floor (keep things on shelves, in plastic and a foot or so off the floor so you won't lose anything important.

Rents in my area are high. A studio apartment rents out for $1200 per month. A one bedroom rents out for $16-1700 per month.

The only way for me to move out of my parents house would be to move to another region.

I'm a law abiding citizen. I have never and never will do any illegal drugs. Nor would I want to have anyhting to do with illegal drugs. I'm not into nor have I raped a woman.

why don't you just buy a laptop , don't build the shed (believe me no woman is going to impress with a guy who lives in a wood shed. Now take the wood shed money and put it in the bank . Then start saving for 3 years or more In the mean while you can use your laptop at most coffee shops and if you meet a girl and It may get intimate take her to a nice hotel and then if she understands your position that your saving for an apartment. She my take you to her place. Or the back seat of the car of the movie threater on a nature trail in the cloths fitting room at the department store Remember your 20 something the Idea of a wood shed is only a ground level tree fort. And at twenty something you should be in your parents house that much anyway to sleep and show your face at dinner occasionally I mean you got me ranting on Woodshed with a sun roof and color TV that means electric My god YOU SMOKING A F ING JOINT try thinking like a twenty something year old What are you going to do invite a nice girl over to enjoy some wine then when she has to pee send her to the back yard to squat. Reply:Hi there,I don't think they would think you were nuts at all.Its a nice idea, bit of privacy for you. Don't worry about being still at home either,in England house prices and rents are very high and anyway my son prefers to live at home,he is saving up in case he meets someone and wants to move out,he is 30. Good luck, any nice girl would see why you want to do that and your friends I am sure would enjoy it,make it a reasonable size if you can though.Good luck.

Reply:its your life...and freedom is crucial at that age...and an escape even if its a shed at your age is nothing to judge, i live in california and i know how high rent can be and im 21 and if i had the option you had i would take it and not give a rats behind what poeple think...sill or not...its your place...so there is nothing silly about what you have to work with!

I personally think thats really awesome. Your own little space, and it' much more interesting than a boring bedroom, apartment or house. Make sure you make it really awesome and furnish it.

I want one now. Or I at least want my boyfriend to have one.
Reply:I guess it depends a lot on the person you bring over. What are your male friends/girl-buddies like? Are they eccentric? Reasonable? Judgmental? Big on appearances?

I'm a female in my 20's, and personally I can see your point. Sometimes you can't afford to go out on your own at a specific point or other... so you may as well make the best of it and try and maintain some privacy.

How do I clear a very, very overgrown garden???

My garden is approx 40' x 70'. It has 2 old apple tress planted in the 50's, one is a smaller 'eating apple' and the other a very large 'cooking apple' tree. I would like to loose both trees.

The garden has not been tendered for about 8 to 10 years and is extremely overgrown, mainly with very thick brambles. There is access to the side of the property, the width is about 6'. (Is that wide enough for; ie. machinery??)

Can anyone advise me as to the best/cheapest/quickest way to clear it ready to start again?

Ideally, I would like to have it landscaped with patios and a shed erected etc. But I have VERY limited funds, and no time or physical ability to do it myself!

It all sounds a bit hopeless but any advice would be welcome

How do I clear a very, very overgrown garden???
Sorry - no easy solution - HARD WORK.

Hire a brush cutter (like a strimmer but with metal blades) to cut overgrown brambles and the like down to ground level.

Cut down the branches from the cooking apple tree and then cut the trunk down - the tree with eating apples (personally) I would keep - they provide good shade and a great habitat for birds.

Only hard work will win the day I'm afraid
Reply:I got an allotment in September last year it was overgrown with weeds, left over plants, and rubbish I tackled the weeds and grass with weed killer a realy good one, that I sprayed 2 or 3 times this takes 3 weeks to take effect I when pulled up what I could and strimmed the rest, we then hired a rotorvater to cultivate the land making sure alon the way to get all the weed roots try not to leave any roots not even the smallest bit or they will come back. Its a long slow process you will need lots of patience good luck
Reply:If you can buy/borrow a pig or two your problem is over. They will rotovate the soil, eat everything down to the roots and manure the ground. Hens do the same thing if you put them in a moveable coop and move them around. They're rubbish at brambles, however!
Reply:I had the same problem!

I bought an old house and the lady that lived there was 102 yrs. old. The whole backyard was a mess. I managed with little effort by pulling things out by hand.

Spring is the best time of year. OR water the area for an extended period of time to re-create the damp soil conditions of spring. Get some good garden gloves and pull out anything that looks like a weed, making sure to get the root.

Sounds like you'll have to do this a bit at a time, as you get some free-time on a Sunday here and there.

When you get an area cleared, put down a heavy layer of mulch to inhibit weeds from sprouting of any remaining roots from regrowth.

You'll find that the damp soil allows roots to come out easily. It's much lighter work than turning everything over with a spade or rototilling and starting over. Plus, you won't have to replace all the existing plantings.

You can often get the mulch or wood chippings from your town highway department for FREE! many will dump a load at your home and you won't have to go to their site.

End result = may take a few afternoons work, but cost no more than the price of garden gloves and watering. : )

.
Reply:The trees will ome down with a chainsaw. To remove the stump you will need seperate machinery. Or some good diggers! You might just get a stump remover through the 6'.

Brambles are relatively easy to clear. They have reasonable shallow roots and runners so can be traced.

Chop off the top layer so as to make the soil accessible. You could use a brushcutter for this part. Brambles roots are easiest removed by forking them loose. Spades tend to chop off bits of root. Make sure the soil is moist, it helps the roots to dislodge. Water the soil if needed for a few days in a row ...

After you cleared it I would suggest blacking it out for 2 growing seasons. You can use old carpets or buy pondliner for the job. That will stop anything from germinating and give you a weed-free surface to work after that

We called it a "Garden (ing) Party". Again invited all the friends we could muster with a promise of free food and beer; as they arrived, ones who had brought no gardening implements chose from ones we had begged %26amp; borrowed and they worked out their own work plans.

We did a cold buffet based mostly on Ploughman's fare.

It was a lovely warm day and people voted it was one of the best parties they had ever been to.
Reply:Employ a gardener for one day..or two.. harder than it looks..and to take the debris away...Good Luck.
Reply:Try having a Garden Clearing BBQ Party. Invite all of your friends, tell them to dress in old clothes and then get stuck in. The only way to clear it really is by hand.
Reply:Hire an Allen Scythe from your local hire shop. This will tackle most of the plants.

A landscape contractor will charge about £1200 to clear this site and remove all the waste, Look in your yellow pages for a BALI registered company.

Do I need a licence to pour pints of beer in my garden shed?

Me and my friends are sick of the poxy government taking away our rights( smoking and all that crap) so Ive decided to turn my shed into a mini pub,I wont be selling the beer as all my friends will be chipping in to buy the booze, my shed will be a smoke zone if the none smokers dont like it then they can go water my onions in the greenhouse..I will also have Card games,Dominoes,Strippers on a Saturday night and Bingo on sunday afternoon.

My question is, do I need FRIGGIN LICENCE for having some fun in my garden shed. or Is the British tossing government going to deny me this aswell?

Do I need a licence to pour pints of beer in my garden shed?
Brilliant idea but unfortunately I think you will need a license and along with that license you will have to signup to banning smoking in your shed and to personally guarantee to suck off all non-smokers should they demand it.
Reply:As long as no moneys changing hands for beer OR BINGO you are fine.

I Want to come - I'm fed up to the back teeth of working hard all week and not being able to go for a pint and a smoke at the pub. The weather has been really sh+te since the ban came in on 1st July and I am fed up with being pushed outside in the rain, hail and snow to have a smoke when the government obviously don't think it's bad enough to outlaw - too much tax going into their coffers I'm sure. Why can't we have smoking and non smoking pubs ? The staff couldn't complain as they'd know when they took the job which type of pub it is. Other people couldn't complain as again they would know they were entering a smoking pub. Surely t o god we are all adults and should be able to choose for ourselves ?

Rant over - thanks
Reply:I know a pub, where at 11pm every night the doors are shut the curtains closed and out come the ashtrays!!!!

Of course, I will never say where it is!!!!!
Reply:I don't think so if you won't be actually selling alcohol, where is this "pub" sounds good!
Reply:I am afraid you would be classed as a private club and risk large fines
Reply:If your friends are contributing to the cost of the drink, that constitutes a sale and you need a licence.

If you don't advertise it, you can probably guess how much notice the police will take of it, but you will be breaking the law. Of course the strippers and the bingo won't help to keep it quiet.

Other examples of this offence are:

1. A cheese and wine party where the entrance charge includes the first drink. This has been held to be a sale.

2. A bottle of wine etc. given as a raffle prize. The cost of the ticket has been held to constitute a sale.
Reply:i think you only need a liscence if you intend on selling the beer. as you are all chipping in and no money will be changing hands then i reckon you'll be ok.

can i come?!
Reply:If you're selling beer then it's a business and you'll need a licence. If your not selling but instead your friends are all just chipping in to help you pay for the beer, then you're fine and don't need a licence. If it's a business you'll have to ban smoking in your shed (lol!) but if it's just friends and their friends getting together for a private meet up then you can smoke away and enjoy your beer!
Reply:i dont think you do no,in fact theres one user on here thats done exactly that, and hes on the web with photos of his pub/shed,if i find him ill give you a link so you can e-mail him.....that will be a guinness and a pack of dry roast cheers.
Reply:I will be there mate, I want to do that with my garage.
Reply:only if you plan to charge a admission fee.

Would it be silly for person with a disability to have a garden shed to live in?

I'm so sick of living at home with my parents being in my late 20s. After struggling finding living wage jobs and finding stable employement I"m stuck at home. If I made a garden shed into a guesthouse in my parents back yard would it be silly? At least I would have my space and wouldn't have to worry about my parents going outside to check up on me. My disabilities are CP,OCD and Terrets. Rents here in California are very high. Studio apartments go for $1100 or more a month. I'm not ready to move away from my parents. I don't have many friends. This would be a cheap way to have a semi guest house. The only downside is that it would not have a restroom inside. That may be okay becuase I can go inside my parents house to use the restroom.

The shed would have a bed inside and a heater. My parents would pay for the shed.

Would it be silly for person with a disability to have a garden shed to live in?
You just asked this question - why are you asking it again?

Silly no, impractical yes. Ilegal, probably.
Reply:Make sure it's even legal before they waste their money. I can just see your neighbors now calling the cops or adult protective service saying how the parents keep their disabled son in a shed. I know it isn't like that, but you know how people are. I hope you get what you want though, it sounds like it could be a cool hangout to get away sometimes.
Reply:I don't think its silly- it looks like you've really looked into all the angles- but I do think you need a window or two for ventilation... You asked earlier about inviting ladies over- Maybe not- But otherwise, I think it's a great idea to get some space from your parents.
Reply:Sounds like a really good idea!
Reply:Sure! I think its a great idea. My father-in-law practically lived in the garage, having his recliner, mini-fridge, TV, beer, radio, DirecTV just to get away from my mother-in-law. I, for one, did not blame him or criticize him for it.

Just make sure that the shed is kept up nice and clean with maybe a sofa-sleeper to close up during the day. Also, make sure you are not violating any zoning codes so that your parents do not get fined.

Have you ever considered working from home? Just because you have these health issues, it does not prevent you from working on a computer at your own pace. Have you looked into Medical and/or Legal Transcription?

Good luck!
Reply:It is more sensible to get a shed made of wood, electric and electrical storms would be dangerous in a steel shed.

I know of a man who rented a very small section of a lot and insulated, electrified, air conditioned and even had running water and a toilet/sink/shower, he even had windows added on the front when he ordered it.

Windows can be added easily, and can be screened to keep bugs out. Think of camper windows.

Skylights make small spaces hot, you might want to be able to cover them with something like a tarp and you will need ventilation. Again think of camper windows and maybe one in the door too.

The door should open out and be unjammable, no outside padlocks or anything that could get you locked inside.

Think about one window being big enough to let you out if you had to get out and the door was stuck..

If you use a heater hang it up high enough that nothing can fall on it and start a fire.

If it is very sunny where you are try to locate it where it gets some shade.

Plant some shrubs around it.

A plywood shelf and be built as a bench/bed and padded with a foam matress. This gives both a place to sit and a place to lay down. If one edge is attached to the wall and the other has legs you can still be able to put stuff under it.

We used to build these all the time for people to use as guest rooms at cottages. We would usually make the shed 8 feet by 8 feet and added 4 feet of porch.

It works out to being the size of a small bedroom with a sitting space outside the door.

The porch is to give you a place to take you muddy boots off before going inside.

There is nothing silly about the idea at all.

well you get the point.

Who cares as long as you are happy and you arent hurting anyone?

Home is where you lay your hat, not what the Jone's have.

If you look up in Craigslist.com, you sure can live lot cheaper in California than just $1,100. LOL!

Plus if you want free furniture, you can easily get lucky for some that happen to post it on Craigslist.com (Nice!)

If you are unemployed, you can still make money in California by picking plastic 2-liter bottle exchange them for full money as well as aluminum can for 25 cents each. Look at the deposit and what it offering for turning in these things. (WOW!)

If you pick up 100 empty 2-liter bottle of pop that are regular name brand, you can make over $90 or more. $90 X 30 Days = $2,700 who would want to complain about making these monthly bucketload of cashflow?

If you pick up 360 pop cans that are occassional brand, you can turn them in that are uncrushed for $2,700.

How do you suppose homeless people make money? They don't collect trash, they collect stuff that come from trash to exchange it for money in store. It is the prudent and hard working homeless are the one that make money compares to other that do it by begging.

So get out there and make some money then you won't have any problem living for rent especially apartment that can price at $600 or more a month.

Try to be open minded and look harder because you will find it. ;)

How often do you sit in your garden shed?

Have you been watching me?

How often do you sit in your garden shed?
Never, the supplies are in there, and it's not a place for rest. That being said, I am IN the shed every day. Seems as if there is not a day that passes that I am not in the yard doing something. Whether it be pruning, weeding, sawing limbs, mowing, raking, edging, or sniping, I have had a ball this summer with my yard! I sit next to the shed sometimes, does that count?
Reply:Never. There's too much junk in it (old flower pots, bits of wood, two bicycles -- one for a small child!, a hose, garden tools, a lawn mower and lawn chairs).

Cleaning it out and reorganizing it is one of my summer "projects".

LoL. Police already put speical cars in high crime places. as soon as the theif starts to drive, it stalls and locks them inside.

Police watch you on camera every time you walk down the street.

It's not fair to leave a PS3 lying in the street, then bust the guy for it.

Is it ok to put puppy outside in garden shed?

I have just got an 9 week old jack russell terrier and at the moment he is sleeping in my kitchen in one of my presses with a quilt wrapped around him. I was thinking about putting him outside in my back garden in my garden shed in a kennel but I think it might be too cold right now? or would he be ok?

Is it ok to put puppy outside in garden shed?
9 weeks very very early days....it's a babkin...and needs to learn.....by being helped to understand what to do, not punished....at 9 weeks the pup will pee at least 10 to 14 times in 24 hours, it's bladder is that small....by the age of 6 months you should be down to 4 to 6 a day then it stays steady....

I wouldn't put the puppy in the shed, at all any age....isolating a dog from the pack is the worst psycological thing you can do to your dog. If you are having problems you can crate him at night, google crate training...or you can put him in the kitchen with a training pad near the back door, they have smells on them to make the pup go on the pad....make sure you feed early on in the evening...about 6 or 7 (overall the pup should be getting 3 small meals a day)......a big big play session before bed, then out for a final pee pee at about 11, wake him even if asleep and take out.....then put back into bed, try not to over stimulate when taking out for the final pee....make sure the bed it really really comfy, get a squishy dog toy teddy thing for comfort and only put it in the bed at night.....

If there is whinning in the night, ignore completely. You should be fine within ten days....

If your pup was from a large litter, it could be missing it's litter mates, or cold as it had them to snuggle up too.

Some people say putting a ticking clock near the bed helps them sleep...

JR's are terrific companions and very loyal, mine is always by my side, house, car, garden....everywhere...they are great fun too...and will be devoted to you....

Try to bond with the little fella......lots of cuddles...

Good luck....many wishes .....
Reply:omg at 9 weeks old? thats awful he'll freeze to bloody death! Why would you get a dog and then put him outside anyway? Whats the point in that? Unhappy face now
Reply:i believe its fair to treat your dog as well as you treat yourself.

ok ill ask you.. would you like to sleep in the shed?
Reply:He's far too young to be outside. I can't think why you would want to do this anyway with a small pet dog.

Would he even be safe outside at night?

I think its a bad idea.
Reply:if you are looking to start to create isolation, aggression problems then yes; this type of breed is hyper to begin with and now putting it in that environment is a mix for trouble; a dog is a responsibility, 24 x 7 for life ; that is what you have undertaken; the answer is NO
Reply:why on earth buy a puppy if you want to put him in the shed. Dogs dont belong in a shed, i think you should carefully think why you waned a dog and if you should keep him?

If you leave your dog in the shed it is wrong and you will be reported by your neighbours to the police!

The dog needs contact, care love and attention. NOT a wooden block to live in.

Did you do any research about jack russels or dogs in gerneral, i doult it, please find the poor little thing a new home.

Info from web site below, try reading about your breed of dog!

CHARACTERISTICS. The terrier must present a lively, active and alert appearance. It should impress with its fearless and happy disposition. It should be remembered that the Jack Russell is a working terrier and should retain these instincts. Nervousness, cowardice and over-aggression should be discouraged, and it should always appear confident.

GENERAL APPEARANCE. A sturdy, tough terrier, very much on its toes all the time, measuring between 10" and 15" at the withers. The body length must be in proportion to the height, and it should present a compact, balanced image, always being in solid, hard condition.

HEAD. Should be well balanced and in proportion to the body. The skull should be flat, of moderate width at the ears, narrowing to the eyes. There should be a defined stop but not over-pronounced. The length of muzzle from the nose to the stop should be slightly shorter than the distance from the stop to the occiput. The nose should be black. The jaw should be powerful and well boned with strongly muscled cheeks.

EYES. Should be almond shaped, dark in colour and full of life and intelligence.

EARS. Small “V” shaped drop ears carried forward close to the head and of moderate thickness.

MOUTH. Strong teeth with the top slightly overlapping the lower.

NECK. Clean and muscular, of good length, gradually widening at the shoulders.

FOREQUARTERS. The shoulders should be sloping and well laid back, fine at points and clearly cut at the withers. Forelegs should be strong and straight boned with joints in correct alignment. Elbows hanging perpendicular to the body and working free of the sides.

BODY. The chest should be shallow, narrow and the front legs set not too widely apart, giving an athletic, rather than heavily chested appearance. As a guide only, the chest should be small enough to be easily spanned behind the shoulders, by average hands, when the terrier is in a fit, working condition. The back should be strong, straight and, in comparison to the height of the terrier, give a balanced image. The loin should be slightly arched.

HINDQUARTERS. Should be strong and muscular, well put together with good angulations and hand of stifle, giving plenty of drive and propulsion. Looking from behind, the hocks must be straight.

FEET. Round, hard-padded, of cat-like appearance, neither turning in nor out.

TAIL. Should be set rather high, carried gaily and in proportion to body length, usually about four inches long, providing a good hand-hold.

COAT. Smooth, without being so sparse as not to provide a certain amount of protection from the elements and undergrowth. Rough or broken coated, without being woolly.

COLOUR. White should predominate with tan, black, or brown markings. Brindle markings are unacceptable.

GAIT. Movement should be free, lively, well co-ordinated with straight action in front and behind.

PLEASE NOTE:

1) Dogs and bitches should be entire and capable of breeding. Dogs should be shown to have both testicles fully descended into the scrotum.

2) Old scars or injuries, the result of work or accident, should not be allowed to prejudice the terrier’s chance in the show ring unless they interfere with its movement or with its utility for work or stud.

3) For showing purposes, terriers are classified into two groups according to their height, which are 10” to 12½” and over 12½” to 15”.
Reply:Aww, don't do that, the poor little mite....my Staffy sleeps in the lounge in her dog basket....we've put up a child's stair gate to stop her from roaming the house while we are asleep, that way she doesn't mess the place up.
Reply:Being seperated from the pack (you) is punishment for dogs %26amp; it would be unfair to punish him/her for doing nothing wrong. all a dog of any breed wants %26amp; needs is to be part of a pack, if you are un-able to give him/her a perminant position in your pack (family) then you shouldnt have a dog.
Reply:It depends on the temperature of the shed and what is in the shed. Chemicals, yard equipment and all that kind of stuff would be dangerous. It also depends on how long the puppy would be in there. You need to socialize your puppy and if it is in there long hours it is not appropriate. My baby lab stays in the garage for short periods when I go grocery shopping, I walked around and baby proofed it so she would be safe. The temperature is aroung 65 degrees in there which is also safe, however in the summer I think the temperature will be too high for her to stay in there but by then she will be trained better with less infrequencies in her behavior. Review all the facts on this shed before you do this and make sure it would be safe and comfortable for her and I would not leave her there for more than 2 hours at a time.
Reply:No, why have a dog to just put it in your shed? You might as well not have bothered getting one. If the dog is used to being indoors he will find it distressing to be thrown into the shed.
Reply:for gods sake whats wrong with you people dogs are not people stop comparing them as long as its warm and dry wont hurt him to sleep in shed when hes older
Reply:its ok to put it outside in summer but in winter it will be to cold for it.
Reply:dogs are fairly hardy animals, but i am NOT a fan of putting them outside, to live. anything can happen to them or they can be stolen, eat something dangerous, etc..

plus yours is just a baby. you shouldn't even be thinking of putting him outside at such a young age.
Reply:you should have a dog, no dog belongs in a shed, even if it does we in the house, you must of known this when you got a puppy
Reply:I wouldn't put him anywhere that I wouldn't sleep myself.
Reply:At this age, he can only survive out in the cold shed if you give him a snug bed with a wrapped up hot water bottle under his blanket ( this will need changing at least 3 times through the night). young dogs cannot regulate their body temperature, especially a terrier, any aged terrier will struggle. What is the problem with keeping the pup indoors? Perhaps it would be easier and better to ask how to house train this pup? good luck.
Reply:Sicko. You should sleep in the shed and give the puppy your bed.
Reply:I personally wouldn't put a puppy out in a shed that is detached from the house at this young of an age. My new puppy was crying ALL night too... and I've only had her for three days. Last night was the first night she didn't cry the whole time. I figure she either got a little more comfortable being in this environment or maybe because I switched her kennel and the location she was sleeping in. I had her in one of those wire cages/kennels, and put a mat in there with a pillow and a few toys and would cover it at night with a blanket. She would sleep in the living room, but would cry SOOOO much I would wake up every hour. I tried that for a couple days. Then last night I switched her into one of those plastic kennel carriers (smaller, a lot less light going in, more cave like), and put her little bed in there. I brought her into the bedroom with me and covered most of it with a blanket again. Hardly any whining last night... and I woke up once on my own to take her out to go potty. Not saying that that's the way to do it, but just giving you an example of maybe how to reduce the crying. Puppies don't like to be away from you, that's why they cry all night. I wouldn't separate your puppy from you like that.
Reply:would you like to sleep in the shed?
Reply:if its cold I don't think you should put him out side
Reply:Do you mean when you cant keep an eye on him? or what?
Reply:I've read a few answers and some people seem to think you have a person not a dog! There is no reason why a dog shouldn't live outside just as most working dogs do, BUT if he's been inside in the warm for 9 weeks he shouldn't be put into a cold, damp or draughty environment, he'll also need a reasonable amount of room so he doesn't feel too enclosed.

I would suggest that if you really want him to sleep in the shed you wait until the weather is warmer %26amp; drier and acclimatize him slowly. Wherever he sleeps needs to be free from draughts and damp and he must have something reasonably soft and warm to sleep on.

As for needing all your love and attention (or whatever the answer said), yes, he will need that, but first he needs to know his place in the pack which will mean teaching him how to behave and where he belongs, it might seem harsh at the time but if you do it right you get a well behaved, well balanced, loveable dog who respects you, it's pack leader.

I have two dogs, one of which (a 6 year old Jack Russell/Staffie cross) I have only had for three weeks and he is in the learning stage (mainly staying in bed and being quiet at night!) but he is learing very quickly and is lovely to have around.
Reply:he is much much too young to be out in winter! my mum owns a dog boarding kennel and although each kennel has a radiator and they are inside she has any pups in the house where it is warmer.

why do you want to leave him in the garden?! in the summer it wont be so bad for him but you must make sure that there is somewhere warm for him to go that would also be out of the rain. im gathering that the shed already has garden equipment etc in it? in that case its not suitable at all for your dog as it could get hurt.

the dog will need an outside run and a kennel when its outside so just keeping it in a shed isnt going to benifit it at all.

it sounds like you dont want the dog in your house. if thats the feeling you should have thought about a breed that is more adaptable for outside living or not get one at all.
Reply:Hi there, there is a very simply answer to this question that i cant believe no one has said! You need to crate train him! Get a crate, it cant be too big, get it so he just has enough room to turn round in it. First try it in the kitchen or wherever hes sleeping at the moment. Ignore him for half an hour before you go to bed.

He shouldnt cry as hell be in a enclosed environment he feels safe in (dogs like small spaces). Also he wont pee/poo in the crate as dogs are clean animals and dont want to soil an environment they are stuck in. If the crying continues move the crate into your room. Also if you opt for a metal crate be sure to cover it with a blanket so hes not looking round panicing when you do have to go to bed, let me know what you think!

xx
Reply:No, he would not, they are house pets, why would you want to put him outside in the first place.......he needs to stay in if cold or warm.......

if you did intend on loving and caring for this little properly why the heck did you even get him...

may as well give him up now to a good home..
Reply:If you want your dog to be crazy active and have no manners around people jumping and barking - by all means keep him in the shed.

If you want a social friendly dog that will still be enthusiasitic but have some manners around people in in the house - you need to keep your puppy in the house with the family.
Reply:I have a 9 week old Jack Russell Terrier puppy too. He cries all the time for attention. You'll screw that dog up really bad and make him neurotic if you don't give him the love and attention he needs now.
Reply:THINKING ??? about putting a puppy in the garden shed! ! Think again. Garden tools, spades, forks, mowers etc. are kept in the garden shed, pets are kept in the house? If you read all the other answers this should give you a clue? People like you should seek the advice of either a vet or RSPCA before buying an animal that you clearly no nothing about!
Reply:wait till he is a little older
Reply:no its against the law... Im reproting u to the RSPCA!!!
Reply:It is a little too cold right now and he has short hair so he would feel the cold more. Leave him in for a few more weeks

Base for garden shed?

Can anybody tell how many cubic feet 7ftx7ft X 6" deep base is ,or how many bags of ballast %26amp; cement I would need(25kilo bags) The shed is actually 7ft x7ft so the base would probably be couple of inchs wider all round

Base for garden shed?
Make the base 8' x 8' then you have a 6 inch gap all the way round which is good for drainage in heavy rain. This will require 32 cubic feet.

You shouldn't need to mix cement into the base, as shed can usually sit on a loose hardcore (medium gravel) base. Unless it is going to have something very heavy inside (like a machine or a car or something). Speak to your DIY supplier for advice.
Reply:all depend on what type of ground you have!!!
Reply:the area 8x8 thats an extra 6" all round is 0.86 of a cube which relates to approx 1.5 tons if thats any help
Reply:If you go to a reputable builders merchant they will be able to do the calculations exactly for you.

However if you want to use ready-mix then a phone call to a company specialising in ready-mix will elicit the correct answer and price.

Good Luck
Reply:You don't really need a base, just make sure the shed is off the ground by using bricks or 2'X2' slabs under the floor joists to allow for air circulation, put some damp proof material between the bricks and the joists to stop rising damp. this material can be got at all builders merchants, I have done it this way on a few sheds and it works, just make sure the bricks are level by using a spirit level and a long board. cement, sand and ballast is a waste of money and labour. A 7'x7' shed definitely doesn't need a base.
Reply:Have a look at the link below. It calculates the quantities of sand, cement etc with the sizes you put in.

Should I apply Preen to my garden PRIOR to tilling?

We bought a house last July. There is a wonderful garden spot in the back which was completely overrun by nasty weeds. We got all the weeds out last fall, but there were many seeds that were shed during the process. I'm tilling this weekend, but am wondering if applying preen prior to tilling would prevent new weeds from coming up.

Thanks!

Should I apply Preen to my garden PRIOR to tilling?
According to their web site Preen creates a barrier in the top 1 to 2 inches of the soil. So, it would appear you would put the Preen down after you have tilled and do any planting.
Reply:Preen inhibits germination by forming a barrier. If you till it in, no barrier. If you are planting seeds, plant the seed and cover them. Don't let the Preen get on them or they, too, won't germinate.. If you are planting plants, plant them first, then the Preen.
Reply:The problem with Preen is it inhibits germination. This might be a problem if you're planting seeds. Good luck!
Reply:That stuff doesn't work well anyway! Save your money!!!

I'm painting you inside of my garden shed? What color should I paint the walls and door?

I'm painting the inside of my garden shed. It will be used as a retreat and has a cot inside for naps. The shed has no windows. Currently the shed door and walls have been sanded and ready to be painted. Inside there are two lights. I would want the door painted a color that I could look at if I have to close it.

Currently the inside of the door is wood as is the walls. I want to paint the walls a cool and comfortable color. The inside of the door I want to paint a color that doesn't get dirty and is calming to look at while closed. The place is going to be used as a place to escape the outside word.

I'm painting you inside of my garden shed? What color should I paint the walls and door?
I would paint your walls a turquoise green and your door a deep turquoise blueish(sp?)-green. Yea, that would do it, in my humble opinion. Happy painting!
Reply:The cool colors (blue, green, purple) are proven to be the most calming of colors. All three would match well together so a combination of them for the walls and door would work.

The lighter the color, the more calming. As for the inside of the door... if you don't want it to look dirty, I recommend a darker shade of blue, which is still calming.
Reply:choose aquamarine or turquise because they are calming colors or chose youre favorite color(s)

I have had a dream of buying a garden shed/mini-cabin to sleep in every now and then.?

If you build something yourself it might be cheaper and then you could build it to your needs so that it locks on the inside and no one can lock you in from the outside. Also, you could build a treehouse with something like a rope ladder where you could role it up and lock the floor perhaps throwing a carpet over the boards? It would be a project but i think it would be well worth it in the end.
Reply:Something jumps out at me, and I have an idea, but you will report anyone who says something you don't agree with.

(The idea is who is going to "break in"? Do you think someone is going to "get you"? If your this afraid, don't do it.)

you can get sliding deadbolts too, in addition to drilling for a doorknob.

I don't know why you shouldn't do this if you want. Put a padlock on the inside, and leave the key in the lock so you don't have to look for it if you want to get out in the dark, or get a couple of big barrel bolt closers for the inside of the door. If you're worried about the window, get bars for it, thick plexiglass or that glass with wire inside it which is hard to break. If you can, get a skylight for the shed so you can see the sky at night, and/or a screened roof vent like they have for RVs that you can open would give you more of a feeling of being outdoors. Take a cellphone out there with you, and a good flashlight. Anyone breaking into a shed will not be expecting to find someone in it, so chances are they'd take off when they realized there was.
Reply:It depends on the area you live in. Do you think you should feel safe sleeping in a small shed? You could also install a real door handle with a lock. If the windows are small then how is someone going to fit through them? It's not about how we all might feel, it's about how you would feel. Only you can answer your own question.

I sleep out on the deck under the stars. No roof or tent above me. It's all about personal choice and feeling.

The shed/mini cabin has woodfinish walls inside. I would be concerned about someone breaking one of the windows at night to break in.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

This would just be a place to sleep maybe at the most once a week.

To make myself feel more comfortable I would want to paint the walls and paint the inside of the door colors that I enjoy.

I would put an airmatress on the floor and sleep in a sleeping bag.

Would it be safe to sleep in a garden shed/treehouse at night?
Depends where you live.

Say, if one of my friends did that where she lived, she'd get mugged or shot. And where I live, if I did that, I'd get mobbed with racoons and eaten alive by misquitos.
Reply:I think that it depends on where you live. Like, here in Idaho, I would feel pretty safe doing that. But, when I was living in Ghetto, California (Oceanside)...I definitely would not recommend sleeping outside. Pretty scary. But, if you have a padlock on the inside, I think that would be okay. It's not like they can cut the padlock if it's in the inside, so that's good.

What would it be like inside a garden shed with the door closed and no windows?

I'm thinking about using a garden shed as a place to relax and have privacy. The shed has battery operated lanterns. I will paint the walls green or blue. The inside of the door will be painted sky blue, green, dark blue or aqua.

The floors are made of wood and have rugs covering the wood.

Inside will also be a cot for naps. A comforable chair will also be inside.

How would it be to be inside and read for two hours and the door would be closed? Would it be uncomfortable? What about taking an afternoon nap inside with the door closed?

Many people think I should get over being afraid to close the door to the shed.

Any suggestions?

Maybe you could have a skydome/skylight

or a window you could open, built into the roof of the shed. That way you may not be bothered so much by having the door shut.
Reply:Feels like very comfy to me. Shutting out everything in busy and hectic daily lives.
Reply:It sounds like you probably feel claustrophobic when the door is shut. Unless you want to add windows to the shed, another way to minimize your fear is by shutting the door for short periods at a time. Eventually you will work up to staying inside for longer periods and maybe you will even overcome the fear completely.

Would it be safe to sleep in a garden shed/treehouse at night?

In my backyard I'm thinking about building buying a garden shed mini cabin to sleep in on some summer nights. The shed would be in the backyard. One concern I have is someone breaking in late at night while inside. The shed I'm looking at buying has wood floors, small windows and a wood panel door. The door is a solid woodfinish on the inside and outside. The door has a handle instead of a doornob. This means the only way to lock the door is with a padlock either on the outside or on the indside.

You should be more worried about someone breaking into your actual house while you're outside sleeping in a shed. And if the windows on the shed are small, what are they going to do, send the trained mokey after you?
Reply:why? do you regularly have people wandering your yard breaking into tool sheds?

put a deadbolt on the inside of the door, thieves dont break windows usually (too noisy),

put an outside floodlight over the door, with a switch inside.

put a baseball bat next to the door and sleep tight.

Should I build a garden shed to get some privacy from my parents?

I'm a male in my mid 20s living with my parents. Because of the tough economy I have a low paying job so I'm stuck living at home.

As a temporary solution I have thought about building a garden shed in their backyard. I would use it to sleep at night sometimes and sometimes a place to have some privacy. The shed would be small but have a door with a lock.

Some people think this is a cool idea while others think this is rediculus.

I've known a lot of people that has done this, and it has worked out great. Good luck!!!
Reply:great idea to have a place to escape to

i would build the shed, but use it the other way around, i would go there and chill out but go into the house at night to go to bed

its safer and warmer and lets face it, more hygenic, you will sleep better in your own bed/room too

kit the shed out, and get a comfy chair,

a place just for you!
Reply:why not just build a tree house? seriously, if you want privacy, get your own apartment and move out.

Are small black balls in shed insect eggs?

In my two garden sheds there are dozens of clusters of minute black balls (like eggs) on the ceiling close to the window and hundreds of singles on the shelf below. They are not in the garage or greenhouse.

sounds like mouse sh1ite to me

Living in a caravan/garden shed?

What would someone think of having a backyard garden shed/ caravan to use as a spare room. The unit would have a small portable heater. The garden shed would be used for afternoon reading and naps. Ocassionally it may be used to sleep in overnight as a retreat.

What would a woman in her early to mid 20s thing of a 26 year old guy having one in his parents backyard?

Get a job and a real home. Women will think you are a loser. They would be right. and I live in California too. It is not an excuse to sponge off your parents.

How can we get rid of screaching foxes from our garden???

We have had a problem in our garden for several months now where foxes are coming in, screaching and fouling in all sorts of places i.e. on top of our fishpond nets, in our dogs water bowl, on our shed roof and on our patio. Does anybody know of any sure way to get rid of the pesky nuisance without the use of an air rifle or sonar fox repeller.

How can we get rid of screaching foxes from our garden???
Set traps for foxes or try using human urine around the parameters of the area. Sounds gross, but most wild life does not like the human scent of urine. Save it up and pour around areas when dry weather is upon you.

Spray with ground up fresh Cayenne peppers or dried ones %26amp; water mixture spray with a weed sprayer to get them wet. Make sure the peppers and water are mixed thouroughly and filtered to keep the hose from plugging. If you let it sit over night, the mixture will be saturated with the pepper oils.

When they lick the wet, ooopssssssss e daisey! It won't kill them, but hey they will wish they had a spanking insead!

Keep all foods and incentives from them, they won't have any reason to return.

Might try a motion light detector light to see if that would help repell some of the problems out of the neighborhood. If all fails, a good ole 32 works real well.

If you were inside your garden shed during the day reading a book or taking a nap would you close the door?

I'm building a graden shed. I'm going to be using it to read and take afternoon naps. The shed has two lanterns inside but no windows. Should I leave the door open or close and lock it?

What would most people do?

The shed door does not have a doornob. On the inside it has a latch inside like a restroom stall.

The laterns are battery operated.

If I was inside the garden shed I would not want to be bothered. My garden is in a safe area.

What I'm asking is should I close the door while inside the shed reading or taking a nap?

Closing the door would give me privacy but there are no windows inside.

A place with no windows also makes me feel uncomfortable to close the door. Some people think I should paint the walls and door bright colors so I can feel comfortable inside with the door closed.

If you were inside your garden shed during the day reading a book or taking a nap would you close the door?
your going to get very hot
Reply:close the door.cut a hole in the wall. make a window!!!

OR just cut a hole in the door that b covered and uncovred so depending on how u feel u can choose if u wanna b connected wiht the world or not
Reply:Isn't there a sort of see-through plastic that you could use to cover the windows? the existing ones with the shutters that you mentioned, or the hole you could make in the door like another answerer suggested. That would solve the problem of no light inside.

that way you could leave the windows open and close the door (if I were taking a nap, I wouldn't feel safe with the door open - reading would be OK)

Is my garden shed haunted?

I have just taken up pottery, and often throw pots on my potters wheel in the garden shed.

I light a few candles, have a glass or two of port and put some music on my gramophone player.

Anyhow, a few Gin %26amp; Tonics and half a brandy later, I was sure I felt a spirit of some kind guiding my hands and whispering saucy things into my ear! It felt entirely real.

I asked Percy; the gardener, about it the next day, and he says he has often felt it when in the garden shed.

Is my potters wheel haunted?

must dash, I'm making a dinner service and another vase...

Is my garden shed haunted?
Yes, dear Lady, your potter's wheel is haunted, just as my own bathroom is. Often, when bored and weary, I take my G %26amp; T's (at least three) and a good book into the bathroom where my maid-servant Thomas has drawn my bath and relax there for hours. I often find when I awake the next morning that another glass has appeared, Thomas is sopping wet and I am just glowing with satisfaction. BTW, can you recommend any female maid-servants? The availability of help here on the Eastern Shore is becoming so strained that Mr. R and I have to share a personal servant. Thomas does not seem to mind but Mr. R is becoming restive.
Reply:M'lady,

First, I wish to offer you my sincere thanks for sharing this question and scenario with these people! Many of these unfortunate souls have never been outside of a bowling alley, and thus are unfamiliar with how the "upper crust" of society lives!

On to your question at hand! My beloved fiancee Megan (Mee-Gun, NOT May-Gun!) had an unfortunate incident with a Gin %26amp; Tonic binge not so long ago herself while staying at a world class resort in Mexico!

She had visions of a mariachi band and a spirit by the name of Hector that entered her persona many times! It was crazy what the imagination will do, isn't it?

The next morning she woke up on the beach with only a towel and a feeling of unusual soreness.

I can only imagine the ride that those spirits took on her that night!
Reply:Lady Florence, it was Percy, you were just too inebriated to remember, I heard he performed some frightfully unnatural acts upon you

Have a circuit breaker in the shed. We plugged in a garden shredder which jammed and blew it.?

The fuse was blown in the house. When i switch the circuit breaker on it switches off again. Any ideas as to why??

Have a circuit breaker in the shed. We plugged in a garden shredder which jammed and blew it.?
Have you checked the fuses?
Reply:If the shredder is still plugged in, you may well have burnt out the motor which means that it will draw too high a current when switched back on.

Unplug and try again.
Reply:Fuses fail by overheating, which generally means that an excessive current has flowed for a substantial period. Breakers jump out when an excessive current flows for a very small instant, and sometimes when there is an earth fault.

If both safety devices have operated in this instance, it seems that you have drawn an excessive current, and since the house fuse was rated at a higher current than the shed breaker, you might have either a smaller supply than is necessary for the shredder, or the device is faulty, and drawing an excess current.

Have you used it before on this socket in the shed?

Check the rating of the house fuse, and the rating of the breaker, and see how their current ratings compare with the shredders power requirement, as shown on its label, positioned (usually) close to the connecting plug/socket or cable entry.
Reply:i agree with bill - i would check the outlet connections for a possible direct short.

2] Repair fuse in house

3] Reset circuit breaker

In that order.

You need to remove the cause, i.e. the shredder or it'll all blow again. Then you need to repair the fuse so power goes to the circuit breaker, it needs power to stay reset.

Once you've got all this sorted you may wish to strip the shredder and investigate what's happened to it.
Reply:Did it blow the circuit breaker or the shredder ? when you switched on, is the shredder unplugged/

not enough details to understand the cause.
Reply:It sounds like you have a direct short some where in the shredder. I don't understand all of the question, is there a fuse and a breaker on the same circuit.? Did you disconnect the shredder? Update some more info
Reply:If you have power going out side to your shed you should have a circuit breaker in the house before the power gets out side This covers all things outside so you don't need another in your shed Be very care full when using live power outside of the house But again a word of warning Have the Circuit breaker inside the house to protect all live connections out side!!
Reply:Because it is still shorted. Did you unplug the shredder?
Reply:YOUR GARDEN SHREDDER HAS A FAULT ON IT
Reply:If by 'circuit breaker', you mean a plug in type of RCD unit, then it may be an 'active' type. This means that it will not re-set without a power supply and good earth to it. Have you repaired the fuse? Have you unplugged the shredder??

I have a metal shed in my garden with a concrete screed floor. The floor is not drying out. Why? What to do?

is it concrete or screed ? screed is a sub flooring and should really only be used indoors. the temperature will also affect it. try sprinkling a little more powder over the surface to help dry it out. you can always rub down any rough surface bits when its dry.

I have a metal shed in my garden with a concrete screed floor. The floor is not drying out. Why? What to do?
Do you mean that you have a concrete slab with a screed topping? And do you mean that the floor is not curing rather than not drying out? I assume that the floor has cured, because otherwise you would have had a few problems fixing the shed to it!

If the floor is cured (fully set) but wet, then the chances are that not enough hard-core was put down before the slab. You might also have needed a physical damp proof membrane between hard-core and ground.

How long has the floor been down and how thick is it? Concrete can take months to dry!

Try either leaving the shed well ventilated as much as you can and possibly use a de-humidifier - easily hired from most hire shops.

And - if you really have a screed floor, then you probably really have a problem.

There are too many possibilities here with too little information.

Whatever you do, don't try to put a floor covering on it just yet - it will just bubble up!
Reply:If the floor is recently laid it will only dry if moisture is allowed to evaporate/escape so the doors/windows of shed need to be kept open as much as possible until the floor has dried. If no moisture/damp proof membrane was incorporated under the floor then it will never dry out completely, always be damp to some extent, drawing moisture from the ground underneath it. Is the shed smaller than the base it stands on? or the same size? will make things different for fixing the problem if there's no membrane.
Reply:There are several reasons for the concrete not to dry out.

1) lack of air flow in the shed. If moisture cannot escape it won't evaporate

2) The humidity of where you are is very high. This will slow the evaportation down and prevent it from happening all together in some cases.

3) There is moisture wicking up through the concrete

4) There could be new moisture introduced from somewhere else. A sprinkler or hose?

If there is adequate airflow in the shed, then locate the moisture source.

If there isn't adequate ventilation, then cut a few holes in the opposite ends of the shed and put screen or louvered vents over the holes. This will increase air flow in in turn increase evaporation.
Reply:You have damp rising through the concrete, which was installed without a damp prood layer. You could remove the shed, and put a building polythene damp proof course, with a 2" screed on top, then replace the shed.
Reply:What base is your shed on? You could try using a greenhouse heater for a few days. Also, you could try lining the floor with a dampcoat paint. Firstly though, I would check underneath and make sure there is an airway for the base to dry out.
Reply:My thoughts are that the floor may not be drying because of the shed being metal. It's like mini-ecosystems we built in science class as kids. The moisture on the floor isn't able to evaporate and escape the shed because the metal is non-porous.

I would open the door to the shed and place a fan in the doorway facing out. It might seem like you're trying to cool the outside, but it'll pull the evaporated moisture from the shed and push it outside while pulling fresh air into the shed. However, make sure that you do this on a day when it's not rained for a few days and isn't going to rain that day. If the air outside is drier than the air inside then you should be good to go. May take a few days of doing this, and make sure you close up the shed at night before the dew falls so you don't get extra moisture in there.
Reply:does the concrete floor have a membrane under it ?

If not, the floor will always "draw" moisture from the ground below.
Reply:Dear Welshy,

pamela is the only one on the right lines. It sounds to me that two things are wrong here, one easier to repair than the other.

The easiest is ventilation. I'm guessing that there is no ventilation in the base of your shed or at the bottom of your shed perimeter. At least 1 or possibly two airbricks or air vents need to be inserted in the walls of the shed at the bottom.

Better still, cut a channel in the base of your concrete insert a small piece of rainwater drainpipe and 90 degree bend in it so that one end (the 90 degree end) comes up level with your shed floor and put a grate or mesh cover over it. The other end, to exceed the perimeter of your base and put something like a pelican beak at that end to stop the water getting in and allow free air flow.

It sounds to me as though your shed base may have been built slightly or even a lot below the level of the rest of the ground its standing in. Even if not, you should ideally have put a non permeable membrane in the shed base before pouring the cement.

Did you slump test the cement if you laid a sharp sand screed?

e-mail me at statusquo44@hotmail.com and I'll go through it with you. Above is really guess work as I know nothing about the location and size and what cement mix you used?

Regards, Peter
Reply:from your name i m assuming you live in Wales, if so your weather is the problem, high rainfall damp conditions will not make the concrete easy to dry, but the mix of concrete may be a factor and being a metal shed will not help allow a throughput of air on dry days, if it is a handmade mix then you got it wrong and you can rectify by adding /sprinkling the surface with cement, brush in with a yard brush ,this will mark the surface but you can use it to your advantage by making it a non slip floor, if it is a bought in mix the water content is always high and takes longer to go off, regards LF
Reply:put a heater in there for a day.
