about 50 friends in each cage so quite large and have been building for a few years so have some skills. At present 5 cages in garden shed but need to make bigger ones and catch the escapees.
About to undertake making new rattie cages one for the girls and one for the boys.Advice ,hints, comment?
You could use an old chest of drawers.
Take out the drawers and measure for the size to cut some Plexiglas or another type of waterproof material.
Be sure to use something strong so the little furries don't chew up the new cage.
If you make each platform a foot high, you then might have around 4 separate areas. You could then make holes and ladders so the rats can move throughout the cage.
Use 1/4 inch or 1/32 inch hardware cloth for the front.
Make sure that the whole front can be opened, as well as a few small doors, so you can clean it more easily.
When you add litter boxes, sleeping boxes, hammocks, water bottles and toys, you will have a neat, handy cage.
I'm not sure if 50 rats would be comfortable though.
That could be overcrowding, leading to fights and unequal access to food and water.
